A study was done comparing the effectiveness of exercise vs medication on lowering
blood pressure in patients with high blood pressure. Two hundred subjects were randomly assigned to two groups. One group was instructed to exercise according to strict schedule, and the other group was given medication to take. After 3 months, the researchers compared the change in blood pressure between the groups and found that the exercise groups experienced a greater drop in blood pressure on average.
a. Is this an observational study or an experimental study?
b. Explain why a blind study is not possible in this situation.

Answer #1

a)

In an observational study, we measure or survey members of a sample without trying to affect them.

In a controlled experiment, we assign people or things to groups and apply some treatment to one of the groups, while the other group does not receive the treatment.

This is clearly an experimental study as two groups have been assigned two different activities and then observations are made.

b)

Blind Study is a study done in such a way that the patients or subjects do not know (is blinded as to) what treatment they are receiving to ensure that the results are not affected by a placebo effect (the power of suggestion).

Here, it is not possible as people are performing tasks, which are exercise and meditation and hence, it can not be done without their knowing of it.

Exercise and diet are being studied as possible substitutes for medication to lower blood pressure. Three groups of subjects will be used to study the effect of exercise. Group 1 is sedentary, while group 2 walks and group 3 swims for 1 hour a day. Half of each of the three exercise groups will be on a salt-free diet. An additional group of subjects will not exercise or restrict their salt, but will take the standard medication. Use Z for...

A study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of three different methods to lower the blood pressure of individuals diagnosed with high blood pressure. The researcher was interested in the reduction of diastolic blood pressure in the subjects that were assigned to three groups. The first group took medication, the second group engaged in daily aerobic exercises, and the third group was prescribed a plant-based diet. The subjects were placed in their regiments for four weeks. Diastolic blood pressure was...

Researchers want to test the effectiveness of a new anti-anxiety medication. Three hundred eighty patients were recruited to participate in the clinical trial and were randomly assigned to two groups, of which one received the medication, and the other, a placebo. In clinical testing, 64 out of 200 people taking the medication reported symptoms of anxiety. Of the other 180 people receiving a placebo, 88 reported symptoms of anxiety. Do you think if the patients in the two groups performed...

About 480 women took part in a study about the effects of hormone therapy on middle-aged women; the women were grouped together in groups of two based on their similarities in height, weight, age, etc. Then one person in each group was randomly assigned to hormone therapy, while the other person was assigned to a placebo (they did not know which). After about a year, blood tests were conducted on each subject by a lab technician who was aware of...

A serum cholesterol level above 250 mg/dl of blood is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease in humans.  At a medical center in St. Louis, a study to test the effectiveness of new cholesterol-lowering drug was conducted.  One hundred people with cholesterol levels between 250 mg/dl and 300 mg/dl were available for this study.  Fifty people were assigned at random to each of two treatment groups.  One group received the standard cholesterol-lowering medication and the other group received the new drug.  After taking the drug...

Researchers conducted a randomized, double-blind study to measure the effects of the drug olanzapine on patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder. A total of 115 patients with a DSM-IV diagnosis of bipolar disorder were randomly divided into two groups. Group 1 (n1 = 55) received 5 to 20 mg per day of olanzapine, while group 2 (n2 = 60) received a placebo. The effectiveness of the drug was measured using the Young–Mania rating scale total score with the net improvement in...

Many Americans have high blood pressure which can lead to a number of serious conditions including heart attack and stroke. There are a number of drugs available to treat high blood pressure, but researchers are always seeking new ones with fewer side effects. In this experiment, researchers randomly selected 20 women from a pool with high-normal blood pressure to high blood pressure and measured their initial systolic blood pressure (in mm of Hg). They treated the subjects with an experimental...
