Question

4. If you had a choice between two data connection plans that both advertised download speeds of 50 Mbps, but one had data speeds with an SD of 25 Mbps while the other had data speeds of 5 Mbps, which plan would you choose and why?

Answer #1

We know that standard deviation tells us about the possible spread of the data around the mean.

Assuming normal distribution for the data speed.

We know that 68% of the data fall within 1 standard deviation of the mean

here mean = 50 and standard deviation for one plan is 25 and second plan is 5

For first plan, 68% of the data speed will fall within the range (50-25) to (50+25), i.e 25 mbps to 75 mbps

For second plan, 68% of the data speed will fall within the range (50-5) to (50+5), i.e 45 mbps to 55 mbps

So, it is clear that second data plan is consistent and much more reliable as compared first data plan. First data plan will show higher fluctuation in data speed as compared to second data plan.

So, I will choose the second data plan as it is reliable and consistent.

If you, as an employee, had the choice between a defined benefit
plan or a defined contribution plan, which would you choose and
why? Assume that the net benefit is the same - in other words, that
the amount the company would pay you for retirement would be the
same, the different is purely whether it is under a defined benefit
or defined contribution plan.

Your financial planner offers you two different investment
plans. Plan X is a $20,000 annual perpetuity. Plan Y is a 10-year,
$34,000 annual annuity. Both plans will make their first payment
one year from today. At what discount rate would you be indifferent
between these two plans?

Your financial planner offers you two different investment
plans. Plan X is a $14,000 annual perpetuity. Plan Y is an annuity
lasting 13 years and an annual payment, $20,000. Both plans will
make their first payment one year from today. At what discount rate
would you be indifferent between these two plans?

Your grandfather is giving you an option to choose between two
discount bonds. Both have the same coupon rate and required rate of
return. However, one pays coupon annually and the other pays coupon
semiannually. Which one would you choose?

My
grandfather is giving me an option to choose between two premium
bonds. Both have the same coupon rate and required rate of return.
However, one pays coupon annually and the other pays coupon
semiannually. Which one would you suggest me to choose? Why?

Your financial planner offers you two different investment
plans. Plan X is an annual perpetuity of $15,000. Plan Y is an
annuity for 10 years and an annual payment of $20,000. Both plans
will make their first payment one year from today.
At what discount rate would you be indifferent between these two
plans? (Do not round intermediate calculations and enter your
answer as a percent rounded to 2 decimal places, e.g., 32.16.)

Suppose you had two cubes that had masses of exactly 1 kilogram.
You placed both in a large swimming pool. One cube sank and came to
rest on the bottom of the pool. And, the other cube floated at rest
while only partially submerged. Which cube (if either) has a larger
buoyant force acting on it? Explain how you know.

If you had to use single case or comparative cases studies to
find an answer to a problem which would you choose and why? What
are the main differences between the two that made you choose one
over the other?

You have been given a choice between two retirement policies as
described below. Which policy would you choose? Assume a required
rate of return of 6 percent.
Policy A: You will receive equal annual payments of $10,000
beginning 35 years from now for 10 years
Policy B: You will receive one lump-sum of $100,000 in 40 years
from now.
