The amount of iron present in the livers of rats is measured after the animals had been fed one of two diets for a prescribed length of time.

Diet Amount of iron A 1.00 1.14 1.35 2.01 2.23 2.63

B 1.36 1.59 1.74 3.00 4.81 5.12 5.21

It is desired to determine whether the different diets affect the amount of iron present in the livers. Let S= sum of the diet A observations.

a) Determine (show how you are calculating them) the null mean and the variance of the permutation distribution of S.

b) Use the normal approximation to perform a 5% level permutation test of no difference in the two diets in terms of the amount of iron present in the livers of the rats.
