While you watch the following video, count the number of secure attachment behaviours and the number of insecure attachment behaviours: The Strange Situation - Mary Ainsworth (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTsewNrHUHU)

Consider the following questions as you discuss your results with your group: Why was this activity difficult? What would have helped you? Were your counts the same? Why? What would have improved your “inter-rater reliability”?

Answer #1

This activity was difficult because although we were theoretically aware of what constituted secure attachment and insecure attachment behaviour, it was difficult to classify them when they were being observed. As a group, we should have first come up with a concrete system of how we were to categorise the behaviours we observed. Because we did not clarify this from the beginning of the activity, our counts were quite similar but not the same. A technique we could have used as a group was practising rating other behaviours and comparing our results beforehand.
