Diplomacy is the only way to “peacefully” deescaltate the
tensions that now exist between North Korea and the US/South Korea
as a result of the North’s nuclear capabilities and threats.
First of all, the threat that North Korea presents is not one
of a calculated nuclear attack. The real risk of nuclear destruction
comes from accidents and miscalculations. These situations occur
when two leaders engage in aggressive rhetoric (King Jong Un and
Trump), causing misunderstandings and increased tensions. This
presents the only real risk that a nuclear missile will be fired
due to a perceived threat or miscommunication. This risk can only
be decreased if diplomacy is utilized to boost discussion between
the involved powers.
Although denuclearization may not occur, at least North Korea
will not launch a nuclear missile due to a miscalculation if the US
and North Korea are talking. North Korea has behaved more
“friendly” when engaged in negotiations in the past and also
reduced missile testing during those periods. These effects of
diplomacy will ultimately “defeat” North Korea in a peaceful way
because they will no longer be a nuclear threat.
