How does the Catholic understanding of the Eucharist correspond with or go beyond the discussion of signs and symbols? How would you explain the Eucharist to someone who is not familiar with it, or who is not in a theology class?
Eucharist is the central element of Christian life, especially during the mass. Eucharist is the ceremony of sharing the bread and wine in commemoration of Jesus’ last supper where Jesus said that the bread is the symbol of his body and the wine is the symbol of his blood. So, in order to remember the sacrifice that Jesus did for the mankind to save them from their sins, Eucharist is shared among the congregation during a mass or service in the church. Eucharist is otherwise called the Holy Communion as it gathers people together and it is one of the seven sacraments a Christian could receive in his life. Eucharist after all these years remains one of the most important part of Christianity.
