We are put in groups as part of the course for assignments, projects etc. Sometimes, the students form groups among themselves with their friends to get help. Other times, it is created by the teacher to encourage group activity and behaviour. With self formed group, we are in our comfort zone and work conveniently. There is no growth except for the task completion. When we are put with different people randomly, we move out of our comfort zone, interact with them, develop relationship, accommodate with their personality, identify each other's skill set and talent and utilise it. In the process, we form new friendship, learn group behavior of valuing each other's opinions, efforts, thoughts and ideas. We get to learn a lot from them. This cannot shadow the negative aspects of groups. When put in groups, not everybody adjusts. Few still throw their tantrums and expect their comfort zone. Some put extra efforts while some are totally uninterested in the activity. They play around while others work but still take due credit. This creates a feeling of disappointment and anger. Other things which can hinder the group's positive behavior is groupthink, leaving away our individualities and getting swayed by others thoughts. With time, we learn to deal with different types of people and group. At the end in retrospect, it gives positive feel and any problem can be solved, when put our heart and mind into it. When I become the leader, other than doing the share of the team activity, there is additional tasks of monitoring and directing the team. Helping the team overcome any difficulties which they may face and keeping the team directed towards the goal. It increases our confidence, our leadership, decision making skills, communication and persuasive skills.
