What political, economics, and cultural forces contributed to the forced migration of Indians in the 1830's?
President Jackson and his supporters
thought that White Americans and the Indians can't live in the same
land as it will bring more conflict between the two. So, they
introduced Indian Removal Act in 1830 which enabled the forced
removal of the Indians from their lands to farthest lands.
Another reason was that the white Americans needed more fertile
lands for farming and they found the east of the Mississippi River
the opt place for farming. So, they drove the Indians who were
living in the east to the west thus making room for more farming
lands which in today's standard is illegal.
Seminole leaders wanted to fight the
White rather than giving in to the forced removal and this became
the reason for the 2nd Seminole War. Eventually, the Seminole
leader was caught and he died in the prison. While so many Seminole
people were killed, nearly 4000 were removed by force.
The Cherokee people believed that they could avoid conflict by
learning the American way. So missionaries were sent to setup
schools and educate the Cherokee during the early 1800 but they
were also moved by force.
Although President Jackson was fondly called the people's president
by the whites, he will remain a terrorist leader in the eyes of the
Indians of his time.
