Think about a friend who grew up in a different culture—how did their cultural upbringing and traditions affect their personality development in a way that differed from another person`s upbringing?

How would you now analyze your own personality? Relate this to the theories of personality development that apply in your case. How will you use these new competencies in your work and personal life?

Answer #1
  • Culture definitely has an important part to play in one's personality development. It is a part of our identity which describes who we are as an individual and what we value in life.
  • Through Culture we learn what is expected of us and act accordingly. The way we percieve the world can be effected by the lens our culture naturally views it by.
  • I have grown up in an Asian culture, born into an Indian family and for us family, togetherness and bond matters a lot.Respecting elders and living together as one big huge family is a very important part of my culture which has definitely shaped up my belief system and personality wherein I value these things as well.
  • As a personality I am a people's person, who likes being surrounded by good positive people including family and friends.I like doing things for others and being there for my family and friends which has definitely been shaped by my cultural upbringing and enviornment.
  • But yes I also believe that personality is something which is inherent as well. Its not just influenced by cultural upbringing but also our own self and our own unique experiences.
  • Some people also conform to culture to the extent of becoming iconic representations of it. Others reject it or at the least resist its influence. By the time we are adults we tend to make our own choices and grow beyond the culture we grew up in.
  • Some adapt other cultures and some reject culture altogether thinking that it stifles or corrupts a person’s personality and character.
  • Of course there is a valid connection between the two (personality and culture)which cannot be denied but in the end we each choose how we act or react as we journey along through life.
  • It is inherent upon each of us to accept responsibility for our own choices, once we outgrow the need for supervision by our elders.
