The explanation of the “marketplace” by J. S. Furnivall’s is relevant to our Caribbean reality. Discuss what this means in terms of relations among members of society.
The very famous term marketplace was proposed by J. S. Furnivall and he suggests that there are different kinds of people who live together yet they practice and follow their own social, religious and cultural practices but only in marketplace everyone seems to be equal because their transactions in the society involves only buying and selling. They don’t share any collective conscience which proposes uniform beliefs, thinking and cohesiveness.
According to this term members share only the seller-buyer relationship when they come out to the market place and don’t share anything personal in terms of social, cultural and religious practices. In a pluralistic society, people only need to exchange their goods and services for a price with other group of people, yet they realise that everyone is important for the survival of others.
