The primary difference between the research methods used by hermeneutics and the natural sciences is that the former uses various methods of analysis, which are based on interpretation. This approach is in contrast to those research strategies of natural sciences which stress objectivity and independence of interpretations. Hermeneutics is used in humanities and social sciences disciplines but particularly in theology and philosophy

In terms of the nature of and the relationships between individuals and society, hermeneutics aids the interpretation and understanding of social phenomenon through analysis of their meanings from the individual ‘s perspective. The guiding principle is that it is only possible to know the meaning of an act or statement within the context of the world view from which it originates.
