Capitalist enterprises have a direct influence in the democratic process in the form of financial support of candidates in electoral processes in return for support for legislation that benefits capitalist firms. The political economist Brian Barry argues that capitalists have power over government as they can compel the governments to do what they want them to do by virtue of government’s belief that if they don’t comply then the government is likely to experience a diminution in its re-election prospects. Furthermore, under the current electoral system, groups unaffiliated with a candidate can spend unlimited amounts of money on advertisements to promote that candidate. Thus, wealthy Americans have more opportunity to influence the elections as they are also legall6 permitted by the Supreme Court to financially aid the campaigns of electoral candidates.
