Why does the justification for punishment under kant's
retributivism demand that we look backward to the act done in order
to justify that punishment ?
READING - Kant on Punishment (Retributivism)
Kant was of the opinion that a person should be punished based on the act he has performed. There could be several reasons for which a human bein must have committed a crime on another. But the fact that he has committed a crime on another makes himself eligible to become a victim for allowing criminal acts to be done on him as well. This is the reason why Kant was strongly stating the opinion that we must always look for our actions as the consequence would also be similar. Another act of punishment mentioned was that a human being should be punished based on the degree of crime he has committed.
