The Moralistic Therapeutic Deism or MTD was first introduced in the book Soul Searching: The religious and spiritual lives of American teenagers, by sociologist Christian Smith and Melinda Lundquist Denton.
The book described the religious and cultural beliefs among American teenagers. MTD is a hierarchical system of thoughts that have infiltrated evangelicalism and Christianity as a whole.
Moralistic define the God will towards humans while therapeutic tells us that God wants to make us happy and healthy. The term deism tells us that God exists but never interferes in our lives.
I think the MTD reflects the today’s society because people believe in God but they realize that God would never interfere in our lives. We are living and working in our own interest but most of us believe in God and spirituality so that MTD reflects the modern social values regarding religions and faiths.
