What are the two most abundant elements in the solar system? How much of the mass of the solar system do they make up?
2) 3a. When a rock is formed, it has 1000 atoms of radioactive 14C. At a later time, it only has 250 atoms of 14C. How many half-lives have gone by?

Answer #1

1) 99.9% of the mass of the solar system is sun. So, the most abundant elements in the solar system will be the main constituents of the sun.

Since sun is a star, the most important element in it will be hydrogen (it is the fuel in all stars). Almost 75% of sun is hydrogen. The energy is produced in the sun by converting hydrogen into helium. So, the next main constituent of the sun, and thus of solar system is Helium. almost 25% of the solar system is helium.

All other components in the solar system constitute only 0.1%.

2) Half life of an element is the time it takes for it to become half its initial value.

Here, initially, there are 1000 atoms. After one half life, it becomes 500 atoms. After the second half life the no of particles will become 250 and so on.

Here, after the time t, the no of atoms has reduced to 250. So, the no of half lives passes is 2.

6. Radiometric Dating. You are analyzing rocks that contain small amounts of potassium-40 and argon-40. The half-life of potassium-40 is 1.25 billion years. Assume for simplicity that potassium-40 decays only into argon-40.        a. You find a rock that contains equal amounts of potassium-40 and argon-40. How old is it? Explain.        b. You find a rock that contains three times as much argon-40 as potassium-40. How old is it? Explain.        c. Assume that any radioactive element decays to...

Our solar system is roughly 2.28 x 1020 m away from the center of the Milky Way galaxy, and the system is moving at roughly 227.7 km/s around the galaxy's center. Since most of the galaxy's mass is near its center (and we are on an outer arm of this spiral galaxy), let's model the galaxy has a spherical mass distribution (like a single, giant star that our system is orbiting around). What is the mass of the galaxy (according...

Carbon Dating: All living organisms contain two isotopes (types) of carbon; carbon-12 ( 12C) and carbon-14 (14C). Carbon-12 is stable, meaning that its atoms do not decay. Carbon-14 however, is radioactive or unstable, meaning that an atom of carbon-14 may decay. It does this by throwing off an electron and thus transforming itself into Nitrogen 14. The ratio of carbon-14 to carbon-12 is the same for all living organisims, about 1/10, 000. However, once an organisim dies the carbon-14 begins...

31: What is the best explanation for the presence of active volcanoes on the surface of Jupiter's Io? Group of answer choices Jupiter's gravity distorts it as it alternately moves closer to and farther away from Jupiter. Friction between blocks of ice causes the interior to melt, resulting in escaping gases. As material sinks toward the core, the release of energy melts material, which then escapes as gases and molten rock. Radioactive material heats up the satellite's interior, and molten...
