In 2003 the United States generated 3.88 trillion kWh of electricity, 51% of which came from coal-fired power plants. Assuming an average thermal efficiency of 34% and the heating value of coal as 30 MJ/kg, determine the coal consumption in 2003 in tons.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Electricity from  coal-fired power plants = 0.51 * 3.88 trillion kWh = 1.978 trillion kwh
Heat Value of Coal = 30 * 10^6 J/Kg
Thermal Efficiency = 34%

1 Kw = 3600 kJ/hr

Heat Input required for 1 kw hr of Electricity = 3600 kJ/hr / 34% = 10588 kJ /Kw

For Producing this much , Coal Required = 10588 / 30 *10^3 kJ = 0.353 kG

Coal required to Produce 1.978 trillion kwh = 0.353 * 1.978 * 10^12 Kg
Coal required to Produce 1.978 trillion kwh = 0.353 *1.978 * 10^12 * 1.1 * 10^-3 ton
Coal required to Produce 1.978 trillion kwh = 7.68 * 10^8 tons

A coal-fired power plant (PP) has a rated power of 1000 MWe. It works at 100% capacity (base-loaded) at a thermal efficiency of 35%. It burns coal having a heating value of 30 MJ/kg and a sulfur content of 2% by weight, a nitrogen content of 1% by weight, and a mineral (ash) content of 10% by weight. b) How much coal does the PP consume per year (ton/yr) ? 3*106 tons/yr c) How much SO2 does the PP emit...

Burning 20 tons of coal provides about  joules, which is approximately the annual energy requirement of an average person in the United States. If this amount of energy was provided by the electricity generated by the fission of uranium-235 in a nuclear reactor, instead, what mass of natural uranium would be required? About 0.7% of natural uranium is uranium-235 (almost all the rest is uranium-238, which does not fission like U-235 does). Assume that the fission of each U-235 atom provides...
