What can you comment on the chemical potentials when the plane surface of the liquid lies in equilibrium with the vapor.

Please answer in detail.

Answer #1

When the liquid is in thermal equilibrium with its vapor, the molecules may evaporate or condense at a constant temperature and pressure.

we know that

now if the external work done by a body in a reversible isothermal process is equal to the decrease in helmoholtz free energy.

now the only external work done duering evaporation is work of expansion so da=0 which implies that dg=0.

when dG is =0 ==> G is constant which implies that the chemical potential of the two phases must be equal.

A liquid lies on top of the horizontal surface of a block of glass. A ray of light traveling in the glass has speed 1.85×108m/s, wavelength 365 nm, and frequency 5.07×1014Hz. The ray is incident on the surface of the glass at an angle of 38.0∘ with respect to the normal to the surface. The ray that refracts into the liquid makes an angle of 44.7∘ with the normal to the interface between the two materials. a) What is the...

Assume that you have a liquid in a cylinder equipped with a movable piston. There is no air in the cylinder, the volume of space above the liquid is 200 mL, and the equilibrium vapor pressure above the liquid is 29.0 mm Hg: What is the equilibrium pressure above the liquid when the volume of space is decreased from 200 mL to 100 mL at constant temperature? P = _______________ mm Hg Express your answer to two significant figures.
