Waves traveling through an opening are dispersed by diffraction more widely as
the width of the opening decreases. True or False, and why?

Answer #1

Light diffract more through small opening than through larger opening. So above statement in given question is TRUE.

It is because waves diffract best when the size of the diffraction opening (or grting or groove) corresponds to the size of the wavelength. Hence, light diffracts more through small openings than through larger openings.

A helium neon laser (633 nm) is shown through a very narrow single opening and creates a diffraction pattern.   Measuring difficulties result in a measurement from just outside the maximum to the left of the central maximum to the corresponding point on the right side of the central maximum.   This measurement is 4.4cm.   The pattern is displayed on a screen 2m from the opening.   What is the width of the opening?

Light shines through a single slit whose width is 5.6 × 10-4 m. A diffraction pattern is formed on a flat screen located 4.0 m away. The distance between the middle of the central bright fringe and the first dark fringe is 3.3 mm. What is the wavelength of the light?

Light waves with two different wavelengths, 632 nm and 474 nm, pass simultaneously through a single slit whose width is 8.68 × 10-5 m and strike a screen 1.00 m from the slit. Two diffraction patterns are formed on the screen. What is the distance (in cm) between the common center of the diffraction patterns and the first occurrence of the spot where a dark fringe from one pattern falls on top of a dark fringe from the other pattern?

Light waves with two different wavelengths, 632 nm and 474 nm, pass simultaneously through a single slit whose width is 8.61 × 10-5 m and strike a screen 1.10 m from the slit. Two diffraction patterns are formed on the screen. What is the distance (in cm) between the common center of the diffraction patterns and the first occurrence of the spot where a dark fringe from one pattern falls on top of a dark fringe from the other pattern?
