Using the solar luminosity, how much hydrogen is used to make helium every second at the solar core? and how much helium is made from the result of the reaction of hydrogen every second?

I know the amount of hydrogen used every second is
600 million tons, but I don't know how to calculate that.
please help :(

Answer #1

The fusion reaction is such that 4 Hydrogen atoms fuse to give a Helium atom.

Energy created per nuclear fusion is:

now, Luminosity of Sun is: 3.828 x 1026 W = 3.828 x 1026 J/s

therefore, Energy liberated per second is: E = 3.828 x 1026 J.

so, the number of fusion events happening will be:

but every fusion requires 4 atoms of hydrogen

therefore, mass of hydrogen needed will be:

converting this to tons gives,

M = 666 x 106 tons or approximately 666 million tons.

1. Nickel, a common metal used in a variety of alloys, is purified via the Mond process to a very high (> 99.99%) purity. One of the steps in the Mond process involves the reaction of solid nickel with carbon monoxide to produce Ni(CO)4, as shown in the unbalanced equation below. Ni(s) + CO(g) → Ni(CO)4(g) How much carbon monoxide, in grams, is required to purify an impure sample containing 4.22 kg of nickel? (to the correct number of sig...

An insulated bottle contains 1 mole of hydrogen gas at P=1 atm and T=300K. Using a magic wand, you order all covalent bonds in the H2 molecules to break instantly. Assume that the magic wand supplies precisely the amount of energy necessary to br eak the bond in every molecule and makes them chemically inert (so they cant recombine) but does not affect the hydrogen otherwise. When the new equilibrium is established, a) What is the new temperature of the...

Hydrogen reacts with oxygen to produce electrical energy in a fuel cell. 2H2(g) -> 4H+ + 4e- O2(g) + 4e- -> 2O2- 2H2(g) + O2(g) -> 2H2O(l)    Eo = +1.23 V Due to losses (typically heat) a fuel cell may actually produce about 1.0 V, but it is still more efficient than an internal combustion engine. The power in hydrogen can be expressed in units of Watts. The Watt in electricity is defined as the volts times current (amperes) 1...

The complex ion Cu(NH3)42 is formed in a solution made of 0.0300 M Cu(NO3)2 and 0.400 M NH3. What are the concentrations of Cu2 , NH3, and Cu(NH3)42 at equilibrium? The formation constant*, Kf, of Cu(NH3)42 is 1.70 × 1013. This is what the hint gave me, Since the formation constant, Kf, is very large, it can be assumed that the reaction goes nearly to completion to form Cu(NH3)42 . Cu2 is the limiting reagent and will be used up...

In the course of routine checking of all journal entries prior to preparing year-end reports, Betty Eller discovered several strange entries. She recalled that the president’s son Joe had come in to help out during an especially busy time and that he had recorded some journal entries. She was relieved that there were only a few of his entries, and even more relieved that he had included rather lengthy explanations. The entries Joe made were: (1) Work in Process Inventory...
