on General Physics Lab (Measurement)

Explain the water immersion method and compare them with the volume computed from the dimensions of the cylinder.

Mention which method is more precise.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Water immersion method - This method is used to measure the volume of an irregular shaped object. To find the volume, an irregular shaped object is placed inside a graduated cylinder and then a new reading is taken from the scale of the cylinder.

Then, change in volume is calculated as

Change in volume = final volume level in cylinder - initial volume level in cylinder (before putting in the object)

This change in volume will give us the volume of the object.

Accuracy

If we want to measure the volume of a regular shaped object like a cylinder, spherical, cube etc then we can easily do that by using physical dimensions. This will be more accurate. However, in case of irregular shaped objects, finding physical dimensions is difficult and has a lot of uncertainty.

General data for this problem to be used in the rational method approach and the water balance: The 25-yr IDF curve for a 19,955 m2 watershed area is given by the equation I = A/(B+t) where I is the average rainfall intensity in mm/h, t is the rainfall duration in minutes, A = 22,000 and B = 80. Area has composite runoff coefficient C=0.82 and time of concentration tc= 20 min = 0.3333 h. For the special case of the...

Students in a physics lab set up an apparatus to study the collisions between two lab carts. They affix identical springs at opposite ends of the track. They place a small cart on the left side of the track and a larger, more massive cart on the right side of the track. IN numerous trials, the students press the carts against the springs and then release them from rest such that they are launched towards eachother. The carts are affixed...

Below is the background info for the lab assignment. The 4 blank boxes are the questions I would like answers too. The end point for the fine titration was 35.90 mL in the burette when the solution turned bright green again. And the coarse titration I got 35.36mL as the end point. 35.9 mL is exact in case you need that info. Thanks!
