Ionized stones are stones that have lost one or more electrons. Photons can ionize atoms. Are ionized atoms easier to make with res light or blue light? Explain

Homework Answers

Answer #1

It is easier to ionize a particle with blue light. Kinetic energy of an ejected particle is given by :

where h is the Plank's constant, v is the frequency and is the work function, i.e. the minimum energy required to ionize the stone i.e. make it lose an electron.

As all parameters are constant weather ionization will occur or not depends upon the frequency of the photon and as the frequency of blue light is greater than red light. Ionized stones are easier to make with blue light.

Which of the following statements about how light can interact with atoms is correct? (Check all that are correct) The photons most likely to ionize atoms have the longest wavelengths An atom can most easily absorb a photon with an energy that is equal to the difference in energy of two electron states. Atoms can be ionized by thermal collisions at very high temperatures. One such ion is Cr23+, a chromium atom with only a single electron. In addition to thermal energy, one can also use photons to impart energy to Si so that some electrons from the valence band can jump over to the conduction band. What is the maximum wavelength of the light that can be used to excite an electron from the valence band to the conduction band of Si at 300K? The same electrons can fall back to the valence band giving out the energy as radiation. Calculate the wavelength of the light...

In the movie, The Avengers, Loki's scepter contained one of the six infinity stones - the Mind Stone. Although the Mind Stone appears blue while in the scepter, it actually emits light in the yellow part of the visible spectrum, as well as low-energy gamma rays. It was these gamma rays that allowed Dr. Banner to track Loki back to New York City, where the movie?s epic final battle took place. Presumably, the Mind Stone was formed at the beginning...

Capacitors can be used to count individual electrons, if adding a single electron to one plate causes a measurable voltage increase between the plates. (a) If the capacitor has capacitance C and there are N electrons on one plate (and N missing from the other), write a formula for the voltage between the plates. (b) If a single extra electron is added to a plate (N → N + 1 or ∆N = 1), by how much does the voltage...

Symbols can have more than one meaning. The battle flag of the Confederate States of America is viewed by some as the rebel flag and is a symbol for individualism against authority. To others, it is a powerful symbol of repression, hate, and slavery. Someone wearing the hat or jersey of their favorite team might be perceived as a gang member (friend or foe) because of the symbolic meaning of the colors to another group. What examples can you think...
