Symbols can have more than one meaning.

The battle flag of the Confederate States of America is viewed by some as the rebel flag and is a symbol for individualism against authority. To others, it is a powerful symbol of repression, hate, and slavery.

Someone wearing the hat or jersey of their favorite team might be perceived as a gang member (friend or foe) because of the symbolic meaning of the colors to another group.

The Swastika serves as a good example of a symbol having multiple meanings. While most Westerners see the swastika as a symbol of Nazism,  it is a very common religious symbol in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. The swastika is an ancient symbol that was in use for at least 5,000 years before Adolf Hitler made it the centerpiece of the Nazi flag. Its present-day use by certain extremist groups promotes hate among Westerners but is still in use for religious and spiritual purposes in countries such as India.
