You are producing a school show with some friends. Your job is to figure out a way to project on a screen a lit image that is initially 6 feet tall, and then grows to be 12 feet tall. Your idea for doing this is to put a mask in front of a bright spotlight and then adjust the distance between the spotlight bulb and the mask to change the size of the image. The distance between the mask and the bulb can be adjusted between 1 and 3 feet, but the bulb is fixed at a distance of 30 feet from the screen. You begin by figuring out whether this can be done with a single mask or whether you’ll need more than one mask to cover the whole 6 ft. to 12 ft. range. If it can be done with one mask, you will need to figure out how tall the hole in the mask should be. Since this is a collaborative effort, you will need to show how you got your answer in enough detail so your friends can easily verify your work.

In this exercise, you will analyze the supply-demand equilibrium of a city under some special simplifying assumptions about land use. The assumptions are: (i) all dwellings must contain exactly 1,500 square feet of floor space, regardless of location, and (ii) apartment complexes must contain exactly 15,000 square feet of floor space per square block of land area. These land-use restrictions, which are imposed by a zoning authority, mean that dwelling sizes and building heights do not vary with distance to...
