In the definition of a Universe / System setup, the system and the universe energy changes and both will equal zero! True / False

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Given statement is True

Entropy of universe increases. It implies that the energy always flows downhill. Energy flows from hot region to cold region. In thermodynamics, we assume universe into a system and its surroundings.

In this setup, the the energy flows from sytem to surrounding or sounding to system vice-versa. when the system gives off energy the surroundings gain energy, vice versa. The two changes are equal in size but opposite in sign. However, the total change in energy of the univese is zero in accordance with conservation of energy.

Identify the following statements as true or false. (Use the drop-down menu and select "True" or "False" for each. You must get all 6 correct.) All spontaneous reactions occur quickly. The energy of the universe is constant; the entropy of the universe increases. If a process increases the randomness of the particles of a system, the entropy of the system increases. Which of the following statements about energy, systems, and surroundings is NOT true? The surroundings experience the same energy change as the system in order to keep the total energy in the universe constant. The system can be a chemical reaction that occurs in a sample of matter. The system is the part of the universe that is the focus of thermochemical study. The surroundings can provide thermal energy to the system.
