The standard for the second was once based on a fraction of a solar day. Why is this is not a good standard?

Answer #1

The standard for the second is not good because irregularities in rotation of earth could not be taken into account by astronomical theory and it also does not allow required accuracy to be achieved. Therefore, to define unit of time more precisely, the previous definition of a second had to be changed and now its:-

Second is the duration of 9 192 631 770 periods of radiation which correspond to the transition between two hyperfine levels of the ground state of cesium 133 atom.

Time standards are now based on atomic clocks. A promising second standard is based on pulsars, which are rotating neutron stars (highly compact stars consisting only of neutrons). Some rotate at a rate that is highly stable, sending out a radio beacon that sweeps briefly across Earth once with each rotation, like a lighthouse beacon. Pulsar PSR 1937+21 is an example; it rotates once every 1.55780644887275 ± 3 ms, where the trailing ±3 indicates the uncertainty in the last decimal...

A total solar eclipse is a rare phenomenon that happens at the same location once in about 200 years. During this phenomenon, the Moon passes directly in front of the Sun as seen from Earth. Given the visible diameter of the Moon is very close to the visible diameter of the Sun, the Moon covers the Sun completely and the part of Earth in the Moon’s shadow plunges into darkness during the daytime. The average shadow of the Moon on...

One design for a solar furnace is based on the paraboloid formed by rotating the parabola x2=3y around its axis of symmetry. The object to be heated in the furnace is then placed at the focus of the paraboloid (assume that x and y are in units of feet). How far from the vertex of the paraboloid is the hottest part of the furnace? Express your answer as a fraction or a decimal rounded to two decimal places. Please show...

There are two ways to find the unknown coefficients of partial fraction decomposition. The second method involves using "nice" values of x that are actually zeros of the denominator. So, the rational function we want to decompose is undefined for them, nevertheless, this method works, why?

3. A government is considering installing solar panels on many of its buildings. Installing solar panels would cost $5 billion today, but it would save $1 billion in energy costs every year for the next 7 years (starting from next year). (a) Suppose the interest rate is 5%. What is the present discounted value of the savings in energy costs over 7 years if solar panels are installed now? Based on your calculation, is the project of installing solar panels...
