Advantaged and disadvantages of using pure isooctane, gasoline, methanol and hydrogen as fuel
Advantages and disadvantages of using various pure components as fuels:
1. Isooctane: It is a branched chain hydrocarbon, branched chain hydrocarbon burn smoothly with no knocking. It has a 100 octane number.
2. Gasoline: Gasoline with no blending with ethanol emits harmful gases, degrades air quality and doesn't have a resistant to knocking.
3. Methanol: Methanol is less expensive, sustainably produced and reduces carbon footprint. But based on engine performance, toxicity and fuel availability it is blended with ethanol and petroleum.
4. Hydrogen: Hydrogen has the highest heating value of combustion and also used in various processes like hydrocracking. The disadvantage is, it is difficult to extract hydrogen and to store it safely because of its high combustion.
