Second law of thermodynamics. Liquid water will be heated from 0°C to 100°C, just before its boiling point under 1 atm conditions. Mention if the entropy change in the compressor system is:

a) Ideal (DS = 0)
b) Real (DS> 0)
c) Impossible (DS <0)
d) None of the above

And why ?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Solution

Option b is correct

Given: T1 = 0 degree , T2 = 100 degree

Now,

As the Temperature of the system is increasing

So from Equation of entropy

ds = nCp ln ( T2/ T1 )

So from this Equation we can see that as value of T2 have increased to 100 degree

The change in entropy will increase

Now it can be also explained as

as the temperature increases the thermal Energy of the system increases , the More energy put into a system excites the molecules and the amount of random activity increases so thus Degree of randomness increases and so Entropy increases.

So summing up everything we can say that entropy if the system Ds > 0.
