1. How has technology issues impacted Uber?
2. What strategies could have prevented these problems?
3. Do you feel technology businesses have an advantage or disadvantage over non-technology businesses? Explain?
Uber is a car rental company which has grown with a very fast pace over the last few years but looking at the speed of this growth, the company is not able to keep its technology well verse with the requirement of its business model.
Uber mainly employs two technology – a Node.js system which is used for dispatching the cars to the destination and Python system which is used for calculating fares and dealing with emails from the customers. The main issue in this is that the engineers are not able to work on these software and it has resulted in the friction. Apart from this, the skill levels of the engineers s not to the standard of dealing with such a vast network of cars and emails received from the customers.
In order to deal this issue, the company must implement more sophisticated technology which can handle billions of requests at a given time. The company can also look to provide adequate training to its engineers and look for the engineers working in other leading organizations and hire them.
In my opinion, technology business has an advantage over the other non-technology business as by the use of technology, any kinds of costs can be avoided, for example, with the help of technology, the requirement of manpower can be reduced to the minimum possible which will have a greater impact on the overall cost of business . Apart from this technology can be used to provide better customer service and thus having a greater customer satisfaction, for example, Uber is using technology to provide information about the booked car to the customers and look for the feedback after the completion of the ride. This ensures better customer satisfaction.
