You are a new employee just hired with ABC Inc. your supervisor has explained your job to you and has indicated that you will have a great deal of control over your job once you develop your skills and improve yourself. He compliments your history of accepting responsibility and suggest that you are to feel free to offer constructive criticism about the way your job.

  1. Identify and define the type of theory ABC manager is applying in dealing with his employees.
  2. Explain with examples the assumptions of the identified theory type in part A.

The type of theory ABC manager is applying in dealing with his employees is Self determination theory of motivation. Motivation is the force which encourages a person to act on their desire, needs and wants.psychologists Edward Deci and Richard Ryan proposed this theory. Self determination theory is Macro theory which defines that human beings are motivated towards growth in order to fullfil thier innate pyschological needs.Human beings are motivated most by intrinsic factors. Instrinsic factors that comes from inside feeling or desire of person. For psychological health and well being of an individual, it is necessary to determine their innate needs and fufill them.

The assumptions that self determination theory acts on that people are motivated most when their innate pyschological needs are met. This theory, assume three innate needs like needs for competence, connection, and autonomy.

Need for competence assume that employees are motivated when they master skills to do a particular job and gain success in that. for example- In this case, Manager asked employee to develop their skills and improve themselves. a sales executive masters his sales skill and close deals with clients to achieve targets.

Need for relatedness or connection assume that employees need belonginess. for example- friendship with co workers, peer group, invite to parties.

Need for autonomy assume that people are highly motivated when they have control on thier behavior and tasks. for example- Manager promises its employees to have great deal of control where they can make their own decisions in thier job.They have freedom and it motivated them.
