You are a new employee just hired with Alkozai Inc. Your
supervisor has explained your job to
you and had indicated that you will have a great deal of control
over your job once you develop
your skills and prove yourself. He compliments your work
history, your attitude towards
accepting challenging responsibilities. As your first task he
assigns you to critically review your
JD as well as those of the other team members and not only
suggesting restricting those JD but
also identifying content and process motivation theories that could
be used to motivate them.
As you assess the team members, you find out that the team members
are diverse in terms of
people having different lifestyles and having different levels of
needs. For instance, Maryam is a
23-year-old mother who is working for minimum wage. Ali is 60 years
old, extremely wealthy
and works because he enjoys it. Jan is 45 years old unmarried man
and has few friends or
activities outside the office.
You also meet Sara who is a new manager with a lot of experience
and knowledge. She tell you
that working conditions in Alkozai Inc. are not good because the
building is with a poor heating,
air-conditioning and ventilation system.
You also find out the nature of work in Alkozai is tedious and
managers such as the HR, Finance,
Programs and Administration are rarely available to assist and help
their supervisees in making
decisions and completing their tasks. You find out that shares that
work objectives are unclear
and rewards are determined by managers which may be of no value to
the team members.
Questions
2. Which of the content motivation theories would you suggest for
Sara to use in order to
systematically assess the conditions?
3. Which of the process motivation theories would you suggest for
the HR, Finance and
Admin managers to use?
Answer:
2. Sara does not favor the working conditions. I would suggest her the content motivation theory of 'Maslow's hierarchy of needs' as her needs are based on the content motivation theory of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Her mental needs are not fulfilled which are namely proper ventilation, poor warming, and airconditioning is not appropriate as per her.
3. I would suggest Locke's goal-setting process motivation theory will be best for the situation as it expresses that defining explicit objectives and testing execution for the accomplishment of these objectives and the pledge to these objectives are key determinants of inspiration, as for the situation there is no objective direction no reasonable characterized work likewise they don't have the foggiest idea about the incentive that it has to offer obviously and is chosen by the supervisor as indicated by different decisions. Therefore, for the above-mentioned reasons Locke inspiration will help inappropriate manner to keep them motivated.
