NOKIA

From its humble beginning in 1865 as a single paper mill operation, Nokia has found and nurtured success over the years in a range of industrial sectors including cable, paper products, rubber boots, tires, televisions and mobile phones.

Nokia is a global vendor in the network and IP infrastructure, software, and the related services market. It operates in 3 segments: Networks, Nokia Software, and Nokia Technologies. The Networks segment provides net sales disclosure for the Mobile Access, Fixed Access, IP Routing, and Optical Networks businesses. The Nokia Software segment offers carrier-grade software applications and platforms to provide operations and business support systems, build, deliver, and optimize services. The Nokia Technologies segment is focused on licensing Nokia intellectual property, including patents, technologies, and the Nokia brand. The company serves communications service providers, governments, large enterprises, and consumers.

Leading the Telecommunications Revolution:

Late in 1991, the company strengthened that dedication by promoting Jorma Ollila from president of Nokia-Mobira Inc. (renamed Nokia Mobile Phones Ltd. the following year) to group president.

Ollila had transformed Nokia from "a moneylosing hodgepodge of companies into one of telecommunications' most profitable companies." Not content with conquering the mobile phone market, Nokia began aggressively pursuing the mobile Internet sector in the late 1990s. In addition, Nokia was the first company to introduce a cellular phone that could be connected to a laptop computer to transmit data over a mobile network.

Nokia's ascendance to the top of the wireless world by the end of the 1990s could be traced to the company being able to consistently, over and over again, come out with high-margin products superior to those of its competitors and in tune with market demands. The continuation of this trend into the 21st century was by no means certain as the increasing convergence of wireless and Internet technologies and the development of the third generation (3G) of wireless technology were predicted to open Nokia up to new and formidable competitors.

Rivals such as Samsung, Sony Ericsson, and LG Electronics preferred to confine their activities to the high end of the market, while emerging low-cost producers lacked the manufacturing efficiencies enjoyed by Nokia and Motorola.

Failure of NOKIA :

In the year 2013, the same Nokia Company that was enjoying a 50% share in the market dropped to less than 5% share of the total market. This was the time when the management, shareholders, and the customers of the company feared Nokia’s bankruptcy. The bankruptcy was nearly certain, but the intervention of Microsoft in the market helped the company in getting back to a better position. This gave a chance to these competitors to invest in research and innovation and gain a better position in the market.

3. Organizational Structure

Thirdly, organizational structure, and the culture within it is an important thing to take care of. How Nokia had overcome its crisis:

Early in 2017 a ragtag group of ex-Nokia employees came up with a plan to restore the company to its former glory. Since then, the company has introduced a range of entry level and mid-range phones as well as a few not-quite-flagship, high-end smartphones. It would be fair to say that it’s been a slow and steady recovery for the brand.

In 2018, HMD started making inroads into capturing a larger slice of the global smartphone market and the Finnish OEM will be looking to continue that upward trajectory in 2019. Let’s take a look at the Nokia brand in 2018 and what potentially lies ahead for the revived giant in 2019.

Personal Opinions:

Just imagine, if Nokia had seen the future and adopted Android operating systems before 2009-10, perhaps the horizons of the mobile Eco system would have been very different today. Similarly, Blackberry also failed to see the shift in the mobile market from a communicating device to a multi Media device. Phones transcended the mere communication and functional level to take control of our social lives and presence. The social sites and e commerce growth were trends and changes that both these behemoths failed to see or gauge. They still remain extremely hardware centred, building very physically robust devices but perhaps falling short on the imagination part. I think this is entirely a matter of leadership vision and imagination.

Also if Nokia go for advices from top management consulting firms or any other third parties that can help to formulate better strategies to save the company.

CONCLUSION:

In a world dominated by digital transformation, leaders should understand that operating with the old mind-set will not help their companies face customer behaviour changes or new types of competition- more aggressive and more diverse.
