Q1( 300 words)
Simon worked for a well-known sports gear manufacturer but found
that the organizational culture within the organization was very
negative indeed. Workers were treated like machines, on an
input–output basis – only as good as what they were targeted to
produce. If they produced more than their target, they were not
valued for this – there were no incentives to do so. If they
consistently failed to achieve their targets, they were sacked.
This meant that Simon never bothered to exceed his target because
he was never made to feel valued for doing this.
In light of the above:
A. Discuss in some details( above case) the five
levels proposed by Maslow’s theory.
B. Evaluate the level of Maslow’s need that Simon was stuck on.
What could the manager do to motivate him?

a-The Five levels proposed by Mashlow's theory are - Phsychological/basic needs, Safety needs, Social needs, esteem needs and self actualization needs.
The first level is Basic needs which sits at the bottom of the pyramid. Basic needs are those needs which are essential for a person to survive. These needs include air, water, food, shelter, clothes etc. Person will not move to upper level of needs if they did not fulfill these basic needs.
The second level is safety need which comes after satisfying the basic needs. Person always seek safety, order and security in thier life. This level focuses on motivation of person to find security in thier job, protect themselves from risk and uncertainties. If person does not have safe job and environment then he will be demotivated and not move to upper level of need.
The third level is social need after fulfilling security need. As we know that, We humans are social being so we like to belong to some society or group. At this need, person is motivated by affection, belongingness, friendship, family etc.
The fourth level is esteem level of need. In this level, person is motivated by desire of being respected, valued and recognized for thier achievements. In this step, person wants that he himself and others respect the person. If person has done great work but not valued and recognized then person will stuck at this stage.
The fifth level is self actualization need. This is the top highest level of need of mashlow's theory. at this level, person is motivated to achieve his full potential and seek self growth at peak level.
b-Simon is stuck on fourth level of esteem need because his management tream him like machine. There are no incentives and respect for worker's achievement on targets. They get no credit and value for exceptional work but get sacked for poor job.
Manager can motivate simon by respecting and treating like human. Manager can use performance based incentive program and organize events where his efforts will be praised and recognized on showing high performance.
