Simon worked for a well-known sports gear manufacturer but found that the organizational culture within the organization was very negative indeed. Workers were treated like machines, on an input-output basis – only as good as what they were targeted to produce. If they produced more than their target, they were not valued for this – there were no incentives to do so. If they consistently failed to achieve their targets, they were sacked. This meant that Simon never bothered to exceed his target because he was never made to feel valued for doing this. In light of the above: A. Discuss in some details the five levels proposed by Maslow’s theory. B. Evaluate the level of Maslow’s need that Simon was stuck on. What could the manager do to motivate him?

: A. Discuss in some details the five levels proposed by Maslow’s theory.

Mashlow gave theory of need motivation presented in the form of pyramid structure. The structure state the five levels or  hierarchy of needs. This framework state that people are motivated when they completed one stage of need then move to another level. The five levels of needs are-

Pyschological or Basic needs- This is the bottom level of pyramind which represent the basic needs for human beings. At this level, people are motivated towards their survival or fufill thier basic needs like air, water, food, shelter, clothes, sleep etc. If these needs are not fulfilled then person would not survive and move to second level.

Safety needs- This is the second level of need presented in the pyramind. People are now motivated to get safety, order and protection in their life. At this stage, they seek what can safeguard thier life, protect thier job and create order. for example- employees will buy health insurance to protect thier future, likes to work for a company which offer job security.

Social needs- This is the third level of need which is also called Love and belonging needs. Humans are social being. they likes to be involved with other people. they want to have a sense of belonging like society, culture, group etc. for example- if an employee work in a company where no co worker invite him or likes to hang out or talk then employee will feel demotivated.

Esteem needs- This is the fouth level of need. This is the higher level need driven by ego. At this stage person n seek respect, reputation, diginity, value from others. At this stage, people likes to have recognition for thier achievements and efforts.if a person done some exceptional work and his work is not recognized and respected then it would demotivate the person.

Self actualization needs- This is the top level need at fifth level of pyramind. In this stage, person seek self fulfillment by reaching at his full potential. they are motivated to achieve their peak of success.People are more concerned about thier self growth and want to become the best version of themselves as a human being.

B. Evaluate the level of Maslow’s need that Simon was stuck on. What could the manager do to motivate him?

Simon was stuck on fourth level of mashlow's need theory. At this stage, person seek respect, recognition and desire that other people acknowledge their achievements. In this case, we can see that workers are treated like machine not human beings. Manager does not respect and value efforts of workers who achieve more than set targets. They get no incentives for that but sacked for poor performance. This kind of behavior and culture demotivated Simon to not achieve targets because he knew that manager will not value his efforts and performance. Simon will only be motivated if his efforts are respected, valued and recognized by manager or supervisor.

Manager can do many things to motivate him. first, Praise Simon and other workers like human. Second, Manager should communicate his targets and praise and respect efforts of Simon on achieveing those targets. Third thing, offer incentives like bonuses to improve performance of Simon including other workers. Fourth is to award and provide toke of appreciation like worker of the month or year to Simon on his great performance.
