Describe why Kant would not agree with physicians lying to their patients regarding a diagnosis. Provide an example to support your case.
Kant would not agree with physicians lying to their patients regarding a diagnosis as his philosophical ground for our claims of right and wrongs may be the deontological view according to which certain categorical imperatives should not be surpassed in our actions. Both the ways and the ends should be justified. Thus morally telling a lie is wrong and no matter what the justification be we should not lie. For example, if a patient is suffering from cancer and we lie to him regarding his disease because we fear that he will get depressed a lot. This may be right according to the utilitarian concept however according to the Kantian view this is wrong. In fact, the patient may not get a choice for making the end of life decisions of making a will for his legal heirs.
