In vitro fertilisation is the process of combining the egg and
sperm in lab to let them undergo fertilisation and produce embryo
which will be introduced into uterus of a woman. As this this
process involves much laboratory work there are chances of
contamination.
- The contamination may occur with microbes while collecting the
egg cells from the female as there is microbes in the female
fertile passage.
- The semen is not sterile and is source of microbial
contamination before the fertilisation it should be washed.
- Also as the fertilisation is done in laboratory equipment, poor
sterilisation of the equipment may be a source of microbial
contamination.
- After the fertilisation during incubation, the incubator might
be a source of contamination.
- After the embryo has developed while introducing it into uterus
through a catheter may cause contamination.
