Need advice on a differential diagnosis, a list of the possible diagnoses given a set of symptoms. Tests that could be ordered to rule out each one. Thank you!
College students brought their female friend in to see the nurses, the nurse found a fever. Over the past weekend they went to a few college parties and drank a lot. Their friend started acting weird after the weekend, she was throwing up, stated she had migraines and needed to lay in a dark and quiet place because of the light and noise sensitivity. Today she she seemed to not know where she was, or who her friends were. She thought they were her sisters.
Ans) It's like alcohol poisoning or alcohol hangover effect.
- So,If they are conscious and responsive:
Stay with them. Check often to make sure they are still conscious
and responsive.
Make certain that they stay on their side, not their back. See The
Bacchus Maneuver
Before you touch them, tell them exactly what you are going to do.
Be aware of any signs of aggression. Do not ridicule, judge,
threaten, or try to counsel them.
Remain calm and be firm. Avoid communicating feelings of anxiety or
anger.
Keep them quiet and comfortable. If they are in the sun, move them
to the shade. If cold, move them to a warm place and offer a
blanket.
Don't give them food, drink, or medication of any kind.
Reorient them with care.
Remember that only time will sober up a drunk person. Walking,
showering, or drinking coffee will not help and may actually cause
harm.
