Emphysema is a condition whereby the air sacs between the alveoli of the lungs become damaged that results in reduced oxygen supply. Emphysema is a type of chronic obstructive lung disease(COPD).

The main causes are

  • Airborne irritants that affects the lung cells.
  • Smoking that damages the air sac lining.
  • Deficiency of anti 1 alphatrypsin limits the white blood cells to fight against infection.

The main symptoms are

  • Shortness of breath
  • Severe coughing
  • Wheezing
  • Chest tightness

Treatment includes

  • Life style changes such as quit smoking, avoid exposure of chemical dust, irritants etc.
  • Oxygen therapy to improve breathing.
  • Bronchodilators to relax long muscles.
