Explain the relationship between sleep apnea and obesity.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Sleep apnea can be defined as a sleep disorder in which a person's breath is interrupted during sleep. Obesity on the other hand can be defined as a body mass index (BMI ) of more than 30 or in simple words being overweight.

The relationship between sleep apnea and obesity is that of a vicious cycle. Generally obesity is one of the main causes behind sleep apnea.Obesity causes soft tissue development around the throat and mouth area. This leads to obstruction of airway during sleeping grdually causing sleep apnea. This sleep apnea leads to sleep deprivation and sleep deprivation being one of the main causes of weight gain leads to more weight gain and thus more obstruction of the airway and further increase in sleep apnea. Thus the vicious cycle continues.

Sleep experts believe that sleep apnea is more likely to occur in men than in the general population. In other words, they claim the percentage of men who suffer from sleep apnea is greater than 5.8%. To test this claim, one sleep expert examines a simple random sample of 90 men and determines 9 of these men suffer from sleep apnea. Does this evidence support the claim that the percentage of men who suffer from sleep apnea not longer equals...

10. Tukey’s HSD test Sleep apnea is a disorder characterized by pauses in breathing during sleep. Children who suffer from untreated sleep apnea often have behavior problems, including hyperactivity, inattention, and aggression. A common treatment for pediatric sleep apnea is the surgical removal of enlarged tonsils and adenoids that are obstructing the airways. Suppose researchers at a sleep clinic are interested in the effect of surgical treatment for pediatric sleep apnea on aggressive behavior. They study 11 children without sleep...

Sleep apnea is a disorder in which there are pauses in breathing during sleep. People with this condition must wake up frequently to breathe. In a sample of 379 people aged 65 and over, 83 of them had sleep apnea. What is the lower bound for the 90% confidence interval for the proportion of those aged 65 and over who have sleep apnea. Round to three decimal places (for example: 0.419). Write only a number as your answer. Answer:
