i'm doing a research paper on Jean Piaget and I need more details about these words: schema, assimilation, accommodation, animism, object permanence, egocentric speed
The goal of the theory is to explain the mechanisms and
processes by which
the infant, and then the child, develops into an individual who can
reason and think using hypotheses.
To Piaget, cognitive development was a progressive restructuring of
mental processes as a result of biological maturation and
environmental experience.
1)Schema :-Schemas are the basic building
blocks of such cognitive models, and enable us
to form a mental representation of the world.
it is useful to think of schemas as “units” of knowledge, each relating to one direction of the world, including objects, actions, and abstract (i.e., theoretical) concepts.
2)Assimilation :-Assimilation is a cognitive process that manages how we take in new information and incorporate that new information into our existing knowledge.
Jean Piaget viewed intellectual growth as a process of adaptation (adjustment) to the world .
3)Accommodation :-This happens when the existing schema (knowledge) does not work, and needs to be changed to deal with a new object or situation.
It is the process through which the existing schemes or
structure is modified to meet the resistance to straightforward
grasping or assimilation of a new object or event.
4)Animism :-Animism is the belief that inactive objects are capable of actions and have faithful qualities. An example could be a child believing that the sidewalk was mad and made them fall down, or that the stars twinkle in the sky because they are happy.
5) Object permanence :
Object permanence" is used to describe a child's ability to know that objects continue to exist even though they can no longer be seen or heard.
In his experiment, Piaget would hide a toy under a blanket and then observe to see if the infant would search for the object.
6)Egocentric speed :-meaning the child has difficulty seeing the viewpoint of others. The Pre-operational Stage is split into two substages: the symbolic function substage, and the intuitive thought substage.
Egocentric occurs when a child is unable to distinguish between their own perspective and that of another person.
