A Critical Analysis of the present and future of gas transportation in Ghana after the discovery of crude oil.
Ghana produces and exports an abundance of hydrocarbons such as
sweet crude oil and natural gas. Most villages and towns in Ghana
today lack good drinking water, hospitals, basic sanitation ( lack
of basic sanitation remains a major problem even in Accra the
capital), quality education, etc.The low oil price environment is
one obvious challenge, but there are also a number specific to
Ghana.
1.These include a maritime border dispute with Côte d'Ivoire to the
west.
2. Ghana has been told by an international tribunal not to begin
any unfavourable drilling for oil in disputed waters with the Ivory
Coast which has lead to a major problem for oil transportation from
Ghana to other parts of world.
3. There has been unstale government in Ghana with some ethinic
groups.Control of crude oil and its refinery is governed by
different groups. It has lead to poor road infrastructure.
4. All the projects are located in the richest regions in Ghana . In the poorest regions in Ghana no investor sites projects. Accra alone received over 84% of all investments. The failure to regulate the location of capital is an important cause of it.
5. International energy statistics observed that Ghana is still a net importer of petroleum products even though been petroleum producer. This is not because of insignificant production but put purely, no available midstream infrastructure facilities to engage in petroleum processing, refining and storage of raw and transport final products for the country to achieve energy sufficiency and security.
6. Inland water navigation system is also not operational
inspite there are many rivers in Ghana like volta, black volta
7. Improper development of ports and its connectivity with major
cities has drastically ruined its oil transportation facility.
