Question

define die swell in extrusion

define die swell in extrusion

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Die swell is very common process use in polymer processing by extrusion process. in this process

a stream of polymer material is forced through a die of very specific internal shape , size and geometry. the die swell phenonmenon is the instance where polymer stream is compressed by entrance of die into the die and once polymer comes out of die , the sudden pressure release causes the polymer chain to relax and tries to gain its former shape.

this partial recovery or swell back to the former shape and volume of polymer after exiting the die is termed as Die Swell phenonmenon.

The extrusion die for a polyethylene parison used in blow molding has a mean diameter of 24.0 mm. The size of the ring opening in the die = 2.2 mm. The mean diameter of the parison is observed to swell to a size of 28.0 mm after exiting the die orifice. If the diameter of the blow-molded container = 130 mm, determine (a) the corresponding wall thickness of the final container and (b) the inside diameter of the parison.

You roll one red die and one green die. Define the random variables X and Y as follows: X = the absolute value of difference of the number on the red die and the number on the green die. Y = the sum of the number of dice that show the number 1. For example, if the red and green dice show the numbers 3 and 6, then X=3 and Y =0. (a) Make a table showing the joint probability...

Will the force in direct extrusion vary as the billet becomes shorter? If so does the extrusion force vary during a single extrusion process or stroke? Why? I already know the answer is probably yes. But the answers to this question on chegg are sourced from formulas that DO NOT INCLUDE LENGTH ! If length is not in the formula, you cannot use it to identify a relationship between billet length and extrusion force. So PLEASE use a formula for...
