The Fourier series is a periodic function which comprises the harmonically related sinusoids and they are combined by a weighted summation. The appropriate weights are given and for one cycle (or period),the summation is made to approximate an arbitrary function in that given interval (or the entire function if it too is periodic). The summation can also be said as synthesis of another function. The Fourier transform is an example of Fourier series.
It is a tool which is used to break down a waveform (a function or signal) into another representation that is characterized by sine and cosine functions. in other words, it shows that any waveform can be re-written as the sum of sinusoidal functions.
