What is the key to product success form or function?

It is important that a product should be well designed, but what is most important reason behind the ultimate success of ay product is it's functionality. Customers buys products to meet their end needs, some customers have needs from a product which is not based on functionality but on the appeal . For example luxury cars, buying luxury cars is not for their function but for enhancing the customers self esteem

A majority of the customers buys product which satisfy the purpose for which they are buying the product. The form of the product follows function, obviously customers like the look ,feel and other design elements in a product, but weather the product satisfies the customers needs or not determines its success or failure.
