In 2008, all public companies in Norway were obliged by law to ensure that at least 40% of their board directors were women. List and briefly discuss arguments for and against such legislation in the US.
Arguments in favour:
1. Legislation or quotas lead to action which in turn leads to
education and training of women which as one of the main goal of
the legislation.
2. Out of the box thinking: When organizations run by men for most
of the time will face some women on top of the leadership, it will
surely result in some new ideas of working.
3. There are studies that show women directors have higher formal
education than their male counterparts.
Arguments in against:
1. Many deserving male candidates will not get promoted due to
quotas.
2. There is a way less gender discrimination in US than was in
Norway, so it will kind of a bias then.
3. If legislation is passed, There may be a scenario that single
women will be holding many positions which is clearly not the
motto.
