Explain lossy data compression and lossless data compression ?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

There are mainly two types of compressed data.

1.Lossy

2.Lossless

Lossy data compression:

As name suggest, the data is compressed after removing some parts of original pixels, sound waves or video frames from original data. In this method data quality decreases. By which the size of compressed data is very less as compaired to original data.

Examples :JPEG image, MPEG Video and MP3 Audio.

Loss less data compression:

As name suggest, every single bits of data can be recovered after uncompressed. It is specially used for text or spread sheets files, where losing of data makes a big problem to the user.

Here the compressed file size is reduced, but the size of file is much more than as compaired to lossy data compressed file size. Using larger files to compress is a disadvantages.

Examples:Text file, Spread Sheet files Graphics Interchange File.
