Your job right now is to finish reading this chapter. How strongly would you be motivated to do that if you were sweating in a room at 105 degrees Fahrenheit? Imagine your roommate has turned on the air conditioning . Once you are more comfortable, are you more likely to read? Look at Maslow's hierarchy of needs to see what need would be motivating you at both times. Now recall a situation in your home, school, or work life in which you were feeling particularly motivated to do something. Which of the needs identified by Maslow motivated you then?
Maslow need hierarchy is a five tier model of human needs. It is pyramidal depiction. It starts from physiological needs and goes up to safety needs-love needs-esteem needs- to self actualization.
When physical conditions are not satisfactory then a person will like his/her physiological needs are met first. Reading may help to go above but physiological needs should be met first as physical anxiety will not let it go up.
If reading gives me satisfaction and helps me to go above then I will do that as my first needs are met and I would like to be self esteem and self actualization through reading better books.
In a school sports competition when I wanted to do better. One of the motive was to be well known. In a pyramid of hierarchy I wanted to achieve esteem through feeling of accomplishment(which is second from the top.)
