Should we continue to focus on global free trade even if it harms certain industries and results in unemployment for people working in those industries?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Yes, we should continue to focus on global free trade because trade deals can displace some workers from their current jobs, but they also create many new jobs in areas where America has a competitive advantage such as business services and high-tech industries. Second, despite its harms to some manufacturing interests, free trade also has generated broad-based benefits for U.S. consumers, businesses, and workers. Compared to overall U.S. job creation and dislocation each month, affected largely by technological advances and changes in consumer demand, the impact due to trade agreements is exceedingly small, but positive because, on balance, trade pacts create better and higher paying jobs than the ones displaced. For unemployment steps can be taken.

In this chapter we really got into comparative advantage and gains from trade.  We highlighted the benefit of trade, and showed that it works BOTH on the micro (individual) and macro (economy) level.   Often the discussion of free trade is contrasted by comparing to its logical opposite, "protectionism".  "Protectionism" is an idea that certain domestic industries should be protected (from new products or foreign producers) in order to ensure that their employees aren't negatively impacted.  Those who favor protectionism have...

We have talked quite a lot about comparative advantage and the benefits of free trade in this class. By focusing on producing what you produce at a lower opportunity cost in comparison to others and trading for things where you have a higher opportunity cost of producing, you can have access to more goods and services than if you tried to produce them all yourself. Another way to think about it is that by putting resources into their best use...

However, cash flow is important to investors, managers, and stock analysts. Therefore, decision makers and security analysts need to modify financial statement data provided to them.
