In 2017, President Trump invoked Section 232 to start an investigation by the Commerce Secretary on whether steel and aluminum importations are a threat to US Security. In February 2018, the Commerce Secretary issued the following recommendations as a result of the findings of the investigation:

1. A global tariff of at least 24% on all steel imports from all countries, OR

2. A selective tariff of at least 53% on all steel imports from 12 countries (Brazil, China, Costa Rica, Egypt, India, Malaysia, Republic of Korea, Russia, South Africa, Thailand, Turkey and Vietnam) with a quota by product  on steel imports from all other countries equal to 100% of their 2017 exports to the US, OR

3. A quota on all steel products from all countries equal to 63% of each country’s 2017 exports to the US

President Donald trump has told confidents that he wants to impose the harshests tariffs on steel and aluminium imports recommended by the commercr department, according to three people familiar with th matter.

Trump has said he wabts to slap global tariff of 24 percent on steel imports presented to him in a report in January.he is also considering as much as a 10 percent duty on aal aluminium entering the u.s,which would be morethan 2.5 percentage points higherthan the harshets of commerce's recommendations.
