How does the prisoners dilemma game apply to real-life situations?

Answer #1

The prisoner's dilemma is a standard game in the game theory explaining that why two rational individuals/entity/players might not cooperate even if it appears to be beneficial to cooperate.

A similar situation occurs in our day to day life. Let's take two examples one of Two gas station in a locality and Farmers.

Two gas station: In this case, it is easiler to collude and earn extra profits than to compete. But if there is high incentives to breach like the case happened with OECD collusion.

Farmers: In this case number of farmers are high and even profit margin is not high. SO, a farmer has high incentives to breach the collusion (if made).

on and Vlad are two players in an indefinitely repeated Prisoners Dilemma Game. Let the probability that the game continues one more round be “q”. Assume both players are risk neutral and have a common per-period discount rate of “d”. 1. From this information alone, what must be true about the range of possible values for d and q? 2. Let α1, α2 ∈ R. Consider the following version of prisoners’ dilemma (C means “Confess” and N means “Do not confess”): 2 C N 1 C 0, 0 α1, −2 N −2, α2 5, 5 Suppose that the two players play the above stage game infinitely many times. Departing from our in-class discussion, however, we assume that for each i ∈ {1, 2}, player i discounts future payoffs at rate δi ∈ (0, 1), allowing δ1 and δ2 to differ....

We know that the one-shot prisoner’s dilemma game results in a dominant Nash equilibrium strategy that is Pareto inefficient. Suppose we allow the two prisoners to retaliate after their respective prison terms. Formally, what aspect of the game would this affect? Could a Pareto efficient outcome result?
