Normalize this user view. Make sure to show your work for each view – you should have 4 answers (e.g. Unnormalized, First Normal Form (1NF), Second Normal Form (2NF) and Third Normal Form (3NF). It is possible that some tables will be in 3NF without any changes to their 2NF status. You may just note that in your response. Also make sure to follow good DBDL protocol by capitalizing the relation name, putting attributes in parenthesis and underlining primary keys.

Answer #1

Unormalized:

This Bill of Material table is not Normalized. So First we will Normalize that table.

First Normal Form:

  • So in first normal form we should have single atomic valued attributes.
  • Values stored in column should be of same domain.
  • All the columns in table should have unique names.
  • And the order in which data is stored, does not matter

2nd Normal Form:

  • It should be in First Normal Form.
  • And it should not have any partial dependencies.

3rd Normal Form:

  • It is in the Second Normal Form.
  • And, it does not have Transitive dependencies.

Primary Key

The primary key in the table should be unique. So in this table we can make PART NUMBER a primary key. And PART DESCRIPTION and QUANTITY USED will be dependent on PART NUMBER.
